Overcrowded and understaffed: Durham Prison in crisis

A week after The QT’s exclusive exposé revealing the dire state of the region’s criminal justice system, the Independent Monitoring Board is today publishing its annual report on Durham Prison and it makes for grim reading as Simon Rushworth discovered
  • Low level offenders being released up to two months early across the country to address issue
  • Vulnerable inmates and late arrivals are not getting the support they need despite best efforts of staff
  • Serious concerns raised over violence and self-harm as ‘high risk’ and ‘standard’ inmates forced to share cells
