A hands-on exhibition in Newcastle is sure to appeal to families of all ages who are interested in innovation and the possibilities of the imagination.

Spirit of Invention: A world of creativity from Victorian Britain to the present day – to give it its Sunday name – sees The National Archives take an exhibition out of London for the first time.

Partnering with the Discovery Museum, it was inspired by some of the thousands of creative designs registered with the Board of Trade following the passing of the Utilities Design Act in 1843

The interactive exhibition includes two original entries from the registered ‘useful designs’ which were logged between 1843 and 1884 — an early incarnation of a playpen for babies and a crinolette ‘dress improver’ designed to help a skirt retain its proper position when in use.

There’s also a crowd of replica entries on display from the huge clothbound volumes of meticulously hand-drawn designs with their accompanying detailed descriptions, together with 21st century prototypes and original commissions.
