Turner: Art, Industry & Nostalgia
Visitors to Newcastle’s Laing Art Gallery will be invited to mark the 200th birthday of the National Gallery – by taking in a painting by one of Britain’s greatest artists.
J M W Turner’s The Fighting Temeraire (1839) is one of his best known works, and will be on display from May 10, 2024 for four months as part of National Treasures – a UK-wide celebration of the National Gallery’s landmark anniversary.
The Laing Art Gallery is one of 12 partner venues taking part in the anniversary activities next spring.
The Turner painting provides the centrepiece to a wider exhibition focusing on the themes of art, industry and nostalgia, linking to the rise of steam power in British industry – offering particular relevance to the North East’s rich shipbuilding heritage.
The Fighting Temeraire is a tribute to the ship HMS Temeraire, which played a distinguished role in Lord Nelson’s victory at The Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
